Data Sources

Smoking Costs uses a wide range of primary and secondary data sources in its economic model. These sources, with a brief description of their use and links to the data used, are given below. In order to be consistent, all data relates to 2001 wherever possible. Links will open a new window.

General Household Survey (2001)
Provides data on smoking prevalence and consumption, socio-economic characteristics of smokers, price of and spend on tobacco

Census of Population (2001)
Provides a wide range of data from the most recent Census for a arrange of geographies.

Neighbourhood Statistics
Provides detailed data from the Census of Population 2001 for small areas.

Expenditure and Food Survey (2001)
Provides data on tobacco expenditure, other commodity/service expenditure and total expenditure by total household income.

Family Expenditure Survey
Provides explanation of ‘under-reporting’ on tobacco expenditure (see FES Handbook, Kemsley, Redpath and Holmes).

Hospital Episode Statistics
Provides, inter alia, the number of patients treated for each condition and the number of bed days used per treatment. Also provide age and gender of patients treated.

ONS Mortality data
Provides the age, gender and number of people dying from each condition.

Mid-Year Population Estimates
Provides an estimate of the number of people living in a given area.

Annual Business Inquiry (2001)
Provides the number and sector classification of businesses operating in a given area.

New Earnings Survey
Provides average earnings by occupation, work status and gender for a given area.

Pensioners’ Income Series
Provides data on weekly pensioner income.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH)
Provides data, inter alia, on the number of sick days lost to business as a result of smoking.

Tobacco and Jobs: The Impact of Reducing Consumption on Employment in the UK, Buck, Godfrey, Raw, Sutton, Centre for Health Economics, University of York
Provides analysis of the number of jobs supported by tobacco expenditure and the outcome of a reduction in tobacco consumption on jobs.

The Economic Costs of Fire: Estimates for 2000 (2003)
Provides data on the number, location and cause of fires and the resulting costs, deaths and injuries.

Home Office Research Study 229 (2001)
Provides data on the economic and social costs of fires.

West Midlands Lifestyle Survey (2001)
Provides data on smoking prevalence for different socio-economic groups and on attitudes to smoking and quitting.

Proprietary Association of Great Britain
Provides data on the value of over the counter sales of smoking cessation products in Great Britain.

The UK Smoking Epidemic: Deaths in 1995, Health Education Authority
Provides, inter alia, data on the conditions caused by smoking for different socio-economic groups.
